PEACEMAKERS CONFERENCE
The Peacemakers Conference was initiated to empower youth to build a non-violent world. Held annually in Singapore since 2010, the Conference is supported by many of the leading mediation agencies in Singapore including the Singapore Mediation Centre, State Courts Centre for Dispute Resolution, and Singapore International Mediation Institute. For its effective outreach to the youth, it has also been commended by the International Mediation Institute and the Asian Mediation Association.
The Conference is conducted over 3-days and incorporates a friendly competition component.
Through lectures by experienced mediators and personalized coaching in engaging role plays, Peacemakers participants get to:
- Build greater confidence - participants will be in charge of leading and managing disputants to resolve conflicts amicably; the student-mediator will have to be adaptable in terms of fitting his mediation style to different conflict scenarios and personalities;
- Be self-directed learners - the participant will learn to reflect critically on the effectiveness of various approaches of conflict resolution and direct their own learning on conflict management; the participant will be taught to reflect on past mediation experiences to recognize what he did well and what are the areas which need improvement.
- Become active contributors - the participant has to work with parties in conflict to develop innovative solutions, analyse the viability of each option, and help parties assess their risks and build comprehensive, value-added and mutually-beneficial solutions; the participant has to take calculated risks in making judgment calls on appropriate mediator interventions.
- Become concerned citizens - the participant has to be actively involved in improving relationships while assisting parties to resolve disputes amicably; by assisting in promoting amicable means of dispute resolution the participant will actively contribute to a more harmonious environment.
- Have the opportunity to develop language skills to communicate effectively with parties.
- Have the opportunity to learn to manage conflicts constructively and effectively from professional mediators and lawyers.
Through lectures by experienced mediators and personalized coaching in engaging role plays, Peacemakers participants get to:
- Creating a body of student-leaders who can serve as peer mediators
- Stimulating interest and belief in the school in the use of collaborative and non-violent conflict resolution processes
- Building an environment that appreciates differences and diversity
